MATT SORUM Involved With 'The Pakistan America Peace Through Music Project' - Aug. 1, 2010

According to Koolmuzone, VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum and American guitarist, songwriter and producer Lanny Cordola (GIUFFRIA, HOUSE OF LORDS, MAGDALLAN) will lead a group of musicians from the U.S. that will travel to Pakistan for a month-long musical caravan throughout the country.

The Pakistan America Peace Through Music Project's goal is to bring Americans and Pakistanis closer together by erasing misconceptions and raising awareness of the diversity and beauty of Pakistan and its people, ultimately revealing the commonalities between Pakistani/Muslim and American cultures, to show Americans the Pakistan they never see in the mainstream media

Later on in the year, the Pakistani musicians will come to the U.S. for performances and events joined by their American comrades (including members of GUNS N' ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, etc.), which will also include time for more songwriting and recording. Both the Pakistani and American "legs" of the gathering will be filmed for a documentary. The music and film will then be completed and released for sale on CD and DVD.

The project seems like a multi-song project by the name “The Dreamer Awakes” by Lanny Cordola. The line up includes couple of former GnR members with Matt Sorum on the drums and Gilby Clarke on the guitars while Slash will be on board too.

“Collaborating with the band is a success for the whole music industry in Pakistan,” he said. During the press conference the singer said, “As per the contract with the American band, I will be able to represent Pakistani culture in this album. It will clear many misunderstandings about Pakistan.”

“Americans want to know about Pakistani art and culture,” he said. “This effort is initiated to bring the two nations closer.”

“My project will also benefit other singers. I will try to introduce them on an international level through this album,” he said.

Adler: Four of us would 'love' GN'R reunion
But is Axl up for it?
Rich Chamberlain, Mon 26 Jul 2010, 11:39 am BST

© Paul Hebert/Icon SMI/Corbis

There's only one tour that could top the Thrash Big Four shows in terms of pure shock value, the original Guns N' Roses line-up cocked, loaded and ready to go. Well, it seems that if Steven Adler had his way jaws around the world would be hitting the floor sooner rather than later…

Adler told Billboard.com that four out of the five original guys would jump at the chance of dusting off some Appetite For Destruction-era classics. The only problem is that the ever-controversial, kilt-clad frontman Axl Rose is the one that isn't so enamoured with the idea of resurrecting the band's late '80s line-up.

The platinum-haired sticksman said: "I know the four of us besides Axl would love to do it. I know besides millions and millions and hundreds of millions of dollars that would be involved, I think if we played for the whole world, it would be such a relief...like, 'God, they're finally playing!' It's what so many people really want, y'know?"

We're not holding our breath for that one, but forgive us for having a little daydream about it for the next few minutes…

http://www.musicradar.com/rhythm/adler- ... e=MRRHYTHM

Slash on New Velvet Revolver Frontman: 'We Haven't Found the Guy Yet'

Posted on Jul 26th 2010 5:00PM by Jon Wiederhorn1

It could have been a real episode of destruction. Ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash was rocking out the Guns classic 'Sweet Chile O' Mine' to a sold out crowd in Milan, Italy when a dude squirmed his way to the front, climbed on stage and charged at Slash. Seeing what was going on, a security guard tried to intercept and the fan bounced off him like a pool ball and ricocheted towards the oblivious guitarist.

"I got hit, but I didn't get tackled," Slash told Noisecreep from his Los Angeles home about a week before his band launched a tour of Japan and Australia. "After the security guard broadsided the guy, he bounced into me. But had the security guy not jumped in, the velocity that this guy was coming in with, he would have taken me over the stage, and that would have been a drag because the stage was pretty high up. But luckily, that's not what happened. So I just continued playing and it was one of the best shows on the tour. I'm a rock guy. This kind of s--- goes with the territory."

During our informative conversation with the rock legend, Slash talked about his new self-titled solo record, the future of Velvet Revolver, his new custom Gibson guitar, Appetite, and what players should do if the want to capture that classic 'Appetite for Destruction' sound.

How did your solo album come together?

I've got a history of playing on other people's records and doing sessions and stuff, so during the last Velvet Revolver tour with Scott [Weiland], I decided I wanted to have a bunch of people singing on my record instead. And then when the tour ended I decided the time was right to do that, because I was ready to do something on my own to get away from the sort of band situation I had done for a long time. I wanted to be in an environment where I was the one putting it together, doing anything I wanted.

The record features guest vocals from a wide variety of performers, including Ozzy Osbourne, Ian Astbury (the Cult), Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead), Fergie (Black Eyed Peas), Andrew Scockdale (Wolfmother), Izzy Stradlin (Guns N' Roses), Iggy Pop and Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge). Did you write the songs on the album with certain singers in mind?

I just started writing music. And as I put together these songs, I started thinking [about] who would sound good for each individual song. And once I did that I tried calling these guys and then send them a demo. And most of the singers were into it and enthusiastic. Then we would get together and they were free to add to something or change something as they saw fit. So they were really collaborations. And it was fun to work with these people and see where the songs went.

Any good stories about working with Ozzy, Lemmy or Iggy?

It was an intimate thing and it was a really nice experience working with these people. There weren't really funny stories or anything. It was just about these creative interaction between two artists. But the funny thing about Iggy was I send him the music and then he called me back and said, "Check this out." He was real excited and he put the phone down on the table and put the demo that I gave him into his stereo cranked it up and then sang the lyrics in the middle of the room. And I heard this over the phone. It was a very old-school kind of thing. That was probably my favorite story.

You worked with some unlikely characters like Adam Levine (Maroon 5) and Fergie. Why did you choose these singers who are far out of the field of hard rock?

Well, the music was really diverse and that's how I decided who I wanted for the tracks. With Fergie, I had heard her do rock 'n' roll before. I jammed with her before and she's a hell of a rock 'n' roll singer. So I gave the music for 'Beautiful Dangerous' to her, and she came back with something that was sexy and nasty at the same time. It was a really cool collaboration because it stretched both of our limits and allowed us to do something people wouldn't expect from either one of us.

After you get back from Australia, you're launching a U.S. tour in September. Will Myles Kennedy be doing all the vocal parts for you?

He's been great. He's got a great voice. He's one of the most fantastic rock singers and he's a great guy. It's a lot of fun to tour with him. The band sounds amazing.

Any chance he'll become the next singer for Velvet Revolver?

No, he's already got a band, Alter Bridge, and he's not leaving. We offered him to sing in Velvet a year ago, but he turned it down then. So we're still looking for a singer. As soon as we establish the singer, we'll be able to set the time to actually go in and start working on the record. We've held a bunch of auditions, we just haven't found the right guy yet. We stopped for the tour, but we've been listening to demos from different singers. But right now I can't say there's someone who we're leaning towards. We haven't found that guy yet.

Have you written songs for the next Velvet Revolver album?

When we came back off the tour after Scott left we came back in and wrote half a dozen or more really cool songs. It's really heavy stuff and I think it could be the best Velvet Revolver album yet.

You've got a new guitar coming out through Gibson, the Appetite.

Yeah, I played it recently. I was on tour in Europe and I played it through my own rig so I could check it out and approve the prototype. And I was floored at how great the guitar sounds and plays. And if you look at the specs they're almost identical to the U.S.A. model. So it's very satisfying to me that the guitar is reasonably priced, yet you get as much quality out of it as you get from the higher priced models. So it's sort of a steal. I feel that anybody who picks it up, from a beginner to a pro, it's something that will do the job perfectly and last for a very long time.

Why call it 'Appetite'?

It's a replica of the guitar I used to record 'Appetite for Destruction' and really every record since then, including the record I just did, for which I used this guitar in its entirety. That's where the Appetite name came from. There were a lot of diehard fans that were really in key on the guitar that I used on that record because it has such an iconic status at this point. That guitar sound seems to be appreciated by a lot of guitar enthusiasts. So this guitar is really a replica of that guitar.

For guitarists on a budget who wants to buy this guitar and get the sound you had on 'Appetite for Destruction,' what other gear should they have?

Well, I actually did a Marshall based on the sound of that record as well, which is probably coming out before next year. And that's a signature model Marshall head that was based on the sound of the amp that I used for that record as well. I was just touring with the first prototype and it sounds great. We're doing some finishing tweaks to it and should be out in October or November. Obviously, that would go perfectly together with the Appetite guitar. But any decent Marshall will work.

Are there any great stories of things that happened in recording sessions with that guitar?

Well, the funniest thing about the guitar I used on Appetite was how I got it. I was really broke and I hocked all my decent guitars before we went into the studio to make 'Appetite for Destruction.' All I had left were a BC Rich Warlock and two Jackson guitars, a Firebird and a prototype archtop Strat-style guitar. I brought them all into the recording studio for the 'Appetite' sessions and all three sounded horrible. I was like, "F---, what do I do? I have to do the overdubs and I have no instrument." So Guns N' Roses manager, Alan Niven, showed up the night before I went in to do the Appetite overdubs and brought me this Les Paul. I went in the next day and it was the most amazing sounding guitar. I rented a Marshall that just sounded great and that's what ended up being the guitar sound for the 'Appetite' album, which has now become this legendary album.

Ex-GN'R bassist features on new Manics LP
Monday, June 7 2010, 15:44 BST
By Mayer Nissim, Entertainment Reporter

WENN
Manic Street Preachers have revealed a number of details about their upcoming album Postcards From A Young Man.

The group told NME that one track, 'A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun', features ex-Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan.

Three other tracks are said to feature a gospel choir, while the band's Nicky Wire quipped "back of the net" when told that the title track sounded like Queen.

Frontman James Dean Bradfield said: "We're going for big radio hits on this one. It isn't a follow-up to Journal For Plague Lovers, it's one last shot at mass communication."

Wire added: "We've always been about infiltrating the mainstream. It was a conscious decision this time to want to hear ourselves on the radio. Our mantra at the start was, 'If you've got something to say, say it to as many people as possible'."

A potential lead single is titled 'It's Not War Just The End Of Love' and Wire claimed: "I believe in the tactile nature of rock 'n; roll. There's a generation missing out on what music meant to us.

"You can only elaborate on the stuff that compels you to. But 'It's Not War...' is kind of saying, 'Alright, we're not 18, but even at 40 the rage is still there'."

Il titolo del disco, previsto per settembre, è Postcards From A Young Man e la canzone in cui comparirà Duff è chiamata A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun.

TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2010

Hmmm... Where do I even start ? Since my last post (emmy nom for SOA), a lot o' stuff has happened ! Most important of all, I've got two amazing kids now ! But, I digress. I'm gonna start using this 'news' section for everything (personal, biz, styling tips...huh!?!?) But I will try and keep it organized with titles on the entries. Here you go...

DETROIT 1-8-7 (ABC)...
In April, my longtime friend John O'Brien and I were called upon by Bob Thiele jr (SOA music spvsr) to try and compose all the music for a new cop show starting this fall (2010). Well, apparently we did something right cuz the show got picked up and so did we ! Here's a link for more info...http://abc.go.com/shows/detroit-1-8-7

VELVET REVOLVER...
Well, if you a fan of the band, you've probably seen a lot of press where Slash says we're still a band, AND the next record will be heavier AND that we're gonna get back to work in Feb 2010 AND we still don't have a singer... Well, its ALL true ! That's where that's at.

TOTAL GUITAR magazine...
I just wrote my first column for these guys. Its Europe's biggest guitar mag, so I'm really honored. Its a column on recording and the first one is out soon (not sure if its the next issue though).

ASCAP awards...
Got one last month for the Sons of Anarchy theme song. That's all about that.

HISSss the movie....
this is a film by Jennifer Lynch. Franky Perez and i had written a song for the U.S. troops that Franky gave away via download on one of his trips to Iraq to play for the troops. I took the voCals off and messed around with it and called it 'Beyond the Snake'. it will appear over the end title credits for this film. http://www.hisssthemovie.com/default.htm

HAMILL the movie...
this is a movie about UFC fighter Matt Hamill who rose to fame from the Ultimate Fighter series. It's his story as a deaf fighter and the struggles he overcame. Franky Perez and i did four songs that will appear in the film

BARTROCK....
A new merch line from the Simpsons. a good friend of mine Dave Warren who works at FOX wanted to write a song to tie in with the merch line. It's killer . he and I, along with Franky Perez, John O'Brien and Dave Navarro all worked on it together.

that's all i can think of now, although i know there's more but my fingers hurt from all the typing !

More to come FOR SURE !!!!

KUSH

Slash Promises New Velvet Revolver Will Be 'A Lot Heavier'

'When we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up,' the guitarist says of former frontman Scott Weiland.

Other than taking a short break to play some riffs for Rihanna, top-hatted guitarist Slash spent the better part of last year working on his solo album, which many fans took as further proof that Velvet Revolver were no more.

The supergroup — made up of Slash, fellow Guns N' Roses alums Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland — produced a pair of well-received albums. Then Weiland went back to STP, leaving Velvet Revolver without a frontman. Still, despite the group having been mostly quiet for the last two years, Slash says they fully intend to push forward — and they even have some songs ready to go.

"As soon as we got off the road from the last tour and parted ways with Scott, we got together and wrote half a dozen really great, sort of heavy metal pieces of music," Slash told MTV News. "It's a lot heavier than what Velvet Revolver has put out, so I'm dying to put out the quintessential Velvet Revolver record."

Slash said the new material better matches the group's original intentions. "When Duff and Matt and I first got together, we wrote a ton of material that never saw the light of day, and that was all very heavy," Slash explained.

"It's definitely our natural way of doing things. But when we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up a lot, and we progressively got lighter. As much as I love the two records we did do, one of the things that was progressively more and more frustrating was the direction the band took."

Slash's self-titled solo effort, released in April, features an eclectic mix of guest appearances, from Fergie to Iggy Pop to Kid Rock to former Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy, who's currently fronting the guitarist's touring band. And according to Slash, he wasn't the only Velvet Revolver bandmember with more than one iron in the fire.

"I've been doing this record, and there's a tour and Duff's been playing with Jane's Addiction, so everybody has been pretty busy," Slash said. "But at some point early next year, we're going to reconvene and take a good serious look at everything that we've got."

In the meantime, Velvet Revolver remain a band without a singer — but not for lack of trying. "This next record will be us doing what we want to do without making any concessions to anybody," Slash declared. "Which is why it's taking so long to find a singer, because we want to find the guy who can front that band and not something we have to conform to."

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/164048 ... lver.jhtml
