NIKKI SIXX To Host 'Inside Slash' Radio Special - Apr. 1, 2010

Nikki Sixx, rock icon and host of the nationally syndicated radio programs "Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx" and "The Side Show with Nikki Sixx", will host a one-hour radio special entitled "Inside Slash". Available for air April 2-6, in addition to being heard during "Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx" on April 5, the special will feature an in-depth conversation with the famed GUNS N' ROSES guitarist about his first true solo album, "Slash", which will be released April 6.

Listeners will be treated to songs from the album as Slash discusses his inspiration, as well as his collaboration with an all-star roster of guest musicians including Chris Cornell, Fergie, Dave Grohl, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmister, Adam Levine, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop and others. Slash will also discuss what it was like to work with producing partner Eric Valentine and a rhythm section comprised of bassist Chris Chaney of JANE'S ADDICTION and drummer Josh Freese of NINE INCH NAILS.

"I have been a friend of Slash's since before GN'R and continue to be a friend and fan after almost 25 years," Sixx said. "It's exciting to have him on my radio show so we can breakdown this incredible new album track by track and collaboration by collaboration for the fans, as well as reminisce about our checkered pasts. This is everything I'd want to hear about if I didn't have the opportunity to ask him myself."

"Inside Slash" will air on more than 60 radio stations in the U.S. and Canada, including KLOS/Los Angeles, WRXP/New York, WRIF/Detroit, WMMR/Philadelphia, KISS/San Antonio and WFTK/Cincinnati.

Slash: Finding his voice
The former Guns N' Roses guitarist goes front man-free on new, self-titled album

Justin Go, National Post
Published: Wednesday, April 07, 2010

The Guns N' Roses breakup may have been bitter, but Slash retains respect for his former bandmate, Axl Rose: In making [my solo album] there were a couple of times where I’d think, ‘Axl would sing the ...
In Guns N' Roses' heyday, an interview at Slash's hotel suite at 10 a.m. wouldn't likely have yielded the greatest results. One can only imagine the aftermath following a typical night for the notorious guitarist: Jack Daniels bottles, cigarette butts, groupies - not to mention a barely conscious interviewee. But on a recent visit to Toronto, Slash's first words are a far cry from the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll that fuelled his Appetite for Destruction days.

"I got up at 7:30 a.m., had some coffee and went down to the hotel gym. There was, like, only one treadmill available. It was f--king jam-packed!"

A father of two, sober for more than three years and having recently quit smoking, Slash has made a lot of changes in his life. But if there's one thing that he hasn't managed to get control of, it's singers. And that might be the reason why Slash is also making a big change musically by going solo with his new album, Slash.

"I'm a stickler for a good rock singer. A good rock singer just makes my day," Slash says. "I just happened to end up with a bunch of guys who were extremely difficult."

"Extremely difficult" might be an understatement. In the mid-'90s, Guns N' Roses front man Axl Rose systematically dismantled the group in order to carry on the entity himself without Slash or any of the other original members.

More recently, internal feuding and the chance to rejoin Stone Temple Pilots saw the departure of singer Scott Weiland from Slash's highly successful followup act Velvet Revolver. And while Slash insists Velvet Revolver isn't over, he felt that he needed a break from the band dynamic.

"This was one of those times where I felt like I needed to create my own music without any outside help and be completely in control of my situation," Slash explains. So when it came time to record the vocals, Slash decided to draw from a pool of talent rather than go the front man route. "It started with the music and all the singer choices were inspired by the actual song, with me wondering, ‘Who would sound good on this?' "

The result was appearances by legendary rockers such as Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop and Motörhead's Lemmy as well as peers including Dave Grohl, Chris Cornell and Kid Rock. And while it's clear that being one of the most revered guitarists in rock gave him access to any of his personal idols, Slash also took his chances on some surprise guests, most notably Fergie from Black Eyed Peas.

"I discovered that she has this amazing rock 'n' roll voice, and no would know that," Slash says. "She was really excited to do this 'cause she was itching to do some rock stuff she just has no outlet for. She's probably better at it, to be honest."

But with songs that feature Fergie and Maroon 5's Adam Levine, should fans be worried that they've lost one of rock's last great guitarists to pop?

"As Slash, I'm not all of a sudden going to turn into a pop star," he says. "I figure fans will get it when they hear it. I mean, those are killer songs. If they don't get it, they should!"

If there is anything keeping all of the disparate elements of the new album together, it's Slash's signature guitar sound that defined Guns N' Roses. Still, many fans would rather hear that sound in its original incarnation as his work with that band continues to overshadow all of his efforts since.

"It's really a catch 22," Slash says of his Guns N' Roses legacy. "We made a really influential - at this point iconic - first album that's in everybody's record collection and that's the coolest thing in the world. But I quit the band 15 years ago, and there's not been any efforts to get back together because it wasn't a pleasant split ... I was really bitter about being forced to quit my own band."

Despite this, Slash remains diplomatic about his ex-colleague.

"He's a f--king amazing singer. In making [my solo album] there were a couple of times where I'd think, ‘Axl would sing the s--t out of this.' "

Slash also doesn't hold any grudges against Weiland, with whom he recently found himself on the same plane. While the trip ended in an amicable conversation at baggage claim, Slash isn't sure sharing a flight with his more infamous former bandmate would be quite as civil.

"I have not seen him in 15 years. I have no idea how that would go down," he deadpans before breaking out in a smile. "Chances are he'd miss the flight anyway."

Slash is in stores now.

[ridendo] Probabilmente perderebbe l'aereo, comunque."
