Slash Talks Gay Marriage & Why He's Against Proposition 8

March 23rd, 2010

The laws on homosexual marriage in California are just stupid

The thing was that they wanted to pass a law so that one way or the other it was either going to be legal to have gay marriage in California, or illegal. You had to vote on it, and that was Proposition 8 – if you voted for it, it meant that it would become illegal, and if you voted against it meant that gays could get married. Now, I've been in Los Angeles for a lot of years and with West Hollywood being very close – and having lived in West Hollywood – I have a lot of gay friends; my wife especially has a lot of gay friends and when that was all going on we just felt that we should be supportive. At this point it's ridiculous that two people, regardless of their sex, can't get married. It just seems stupid.

I'm not on some sort of gay rights crusade!

You won't find me at the front of a parade rally, y'know, but there've been things that I've felt strongly about. I remember back in the day when the whole Iraq war was started, I was definitely against that and was part of a political rally against it. I'm not a politician though, and I don't like to go out in a limb and become a ‘big advocate' kind of a guy, it's just not really my style.

The YouTube video I made against Proposition 8, for example, has been taken a bit too seriously

A friend of ours actually taped that, and in fact it was his idea too! I think at the time my wife was like, 'do you want to do this?' I said yeah, so we just did it then and there in the rehearsal studio. It's so funny how things can be taken too seriously, especially nowadays; you put stuff out on video and it's there forever and people take them so seriously.

A marriage, gay or otherwise, takes effort and perseverance to succeed

I've already been married once; I had to go through the trial marriage! I think a lot of it has to do with how, as people, we [me and my wife] are both put together because she's really unique and I'm not really the marriage type; she and I just have this certain kind of ‘bond', and she's definitely a certain kind of girl, just a really cool and fucking rock and roll female. We first met before I got married to my first wife – so I was like 25 and she was 18 – and I was really taken by her, even back then. But I was way too crazy then to even conceive of going into a relationship with someone that I really cared about, so I got into a relationship with someone that I didn't really care about! Years later though, we got reintroduced and we've been together ever since. And it's hard work, relationships take a certain amount of effort but we manage to persevere, and, y'know, I love her to death and she's very loyal. We're very faithful to each other and it's a very cool, rock and roll marriage.

Regardless of my personal beliefs on marriage, no one has the right to tell two people that they can't get married

My wife might fucking shoot me for saying the wrong thing here! Personally – and this isn't the bigger picture, this is just for me personally – I never really believed in the institution of marriage as being necessary. With Perla [Ferrar], she and I were together for four years before marriage came up, and she was like: 'well, at this point it doesn't look like we're going to split up, what are we going to do?' And I could have just been like: 'yeah, whatever'. But she really wanted marriage and so we ended up getting married... and there you have it! I think a marriage is whatever you want it to be, y'know? Obviously it exists if you feel strongly that that sort of legal and religious bond is integral to your longevity as a couple, I'm not one of those people that have super strong religious beliefs about whether you should or shouldn't get married though. But being told that you can't? I don't think that's right.

Slash told The Pulse of Radio that he's really pleased to have Kennedy singing on the tour. "He was one of these sort of youngish rock singers that I wasn't real familiar with, who is probably one of the best, you know, young new rock 'n' roll singers around," he said. "There's actually two songs on the record that he did, and he can basically perform any other songs on the record, plus he knows how to do all the GUNS N' ROSES stuff. So it's worked out nicely."

Slash's solo album is due out on April 6.

The first single from the set, called "By The Sword", features vocals from WOLFMOTHER frontman Andrew Stockdale.

The guitarist uses a different guest vocalist on each track, including Fergie, M. Shadows, Kid Rock, Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl, Lemmy Kilmister, Iggy Pop and others.

BEAUTIFUL DANGEROUS LIVE! Slash e Fergie, live in Chicago 13-3-2010!!

Black Eyed Peas engaging together, not so much in solo turns

March 14, 2010

Fergie shone the brightest during her solo turns, belting out three songs from her 2006 album, “The Dutchess,” including a bouncy rendition of “Fergalicious.” She also starred in the biggest surprise of the show, rising up through a trap door alongside special guest Slash, who delivered an intricate and propulsive guitar solo as Fergie sang the lyrics to “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” a classic from Slash’s days in Guns N’ Roses.

This rock ’n’ roll interlude was extended one song too long when Fergie and Slash performed “Beautiful Dangerous,” a track from Slash’s forthcoming solo album. The tune wasn’t anything special, but as history has shown, Slash’s playing is consistently engaging, even when the material is weak.

Resoconto dell'intervista di Slash alla Canadian Music Week

Slash Calls Michael Jackson Guitar Riff 'Gay' at Canadian Music Week Keynote
Mar 11th 2010 4:30PM

Guitar hero Slash has revealed his distaste for the signature hook from one of his old pal Michael Jackson's biggest hits.

Speaking with CNN personalities -- and real life couple -- John Roberts and Kyra Phillips for his celebrity interview keynote during Canadian Music Week, the former Guns 'n' Roses guitar slinger took the opportunity to clear up the long-standing rumour that he played on Michael Jackson's 1991 hit, 'Black or White.'

"I never played on [Black or White'],' the guitarist explained. "If you listen to [the hook], that's gay. I'd never play that."

Regardless of the sexual orientation of the chord sequence, Slash did admit he could see where the confusion arose. "I played on 'Give in to Me' [also off 'Dangerous'] and in the 'Black and White' video, when Macaulay Culkin was trashing around, that's me playing."

The legendary guitarist, who played live with Jackson several times though out his career and appeared on all of the King of Pop's official releases from 1991 onwards, also took the opportunity to speak publicly about the singer's tumultuous life and the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

"Michael Jackson was f--king amazing to watch," Slash told the CNN twosome. "The one thing that Michael really wanted was for somebody to like him and those [child molestation] accusations just sorta just killed him.

"The fact that he was doing downers really makes sense for his lifestyle."

Of course, the interview wasn't just about the guitarists' relationship with the former Jackson 5 frontman. Roberts and Phillips -- who admitted that she could relate to Slash's rebel side and seemed to take great pleasure in using the vernacular 'ridin' high' -- also managed to get the axe-man to discuss some of the wilder high jinks he outlined in last-year's self-titled autobiography as well as his strained relationship with former bandmate Axl Rose.

"I try not to sit there and say derogative things about his personality, because that is what makes him so great. It's just hard for me to deal with," he told the packed Royal York Hotel Ballroom which included his Canadian metal heroes -- and recent documentary superstars -- Anvil sitting in the front row. "And for some other people to deal with, too," he added with a smirk.

Slash was in Toronto to promote his upcoming eponymous debut solo record, which features contributions from Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl, Ian Astbury, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmister, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, and Fergie.

Slash talks sex, drugs & Axl
By JANE STEVENSON, QMI AGENCY

Slash gave CMW delegates what they wanted during his keyote address at Canadian Music Week on Thursday morning in Toronto: Sex, drugs, rock’n’roll ... and Axl.

Being interviewed by CNN anchors and real-life couple John Roberts (a Toronto native) and Kyra Phillips, the former Gun N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver guitarist was surprisingly complimentary of his onetime bandmate and GNR’s lead singer, one Axl Rose.

“You have to attempt to understand him as a human being and where he’s coming from,” said Slash, 44, in his trademark black top hat, sunglasses, a black leather jacket and torn black jeans in a packed ballroom at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

“I see things very black and white. That’s just me. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s right. And he sees things in a very colourful kind of way, and I can’t really knock it, ’cause that’s just him. So I try not to sit there and say derogatory things about his personality, because it’s his personality that makes him so f---ing great, and just difficult to deal with.”

On his coming solo debut album, Slash, due in stores April 6, the guitarist pairs up with various singers including former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne.

“Working side by side with Ozzy, which is a voice that I had been listening to since my early rebellious days, taking acid and being 13, and listening to Iron Man and s--t, was a really great experience,” Slash said.

He plans to tour in April with a backing band comprising Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge on vocals, Bobby Schneck (Slash’s Blues Ball band) on rhythm guitar, Dave Henning (Big Wreck) on bass and Brent Fitz (Alice Cooper) on drums.

Slash, who was born Saul Hudson but given his famous nickname by character actor Seymour Cassel, said he remains to this day still turned on by the sight of a guitar.

He joked that he keeps one in the bedroom to keep things interesting with his wife, Perla.

“We keep a guitar at the end of the bed, in case I need some imagination,” he said with a laugh. “There’s something about a guitar that is just innately sexy. And it is still to this day, when I open up a guitar case, there’s still this sense of ‘Ahhhhh.’”

The onetime heroin and cocaine abuser also said that he has only been sober for three-and-a-half years, despite being a married father of two young boys — aged five and seven.

“When Perla announced that she was pregnant, I was loaded on Oxycontin going to an Aerosmith gig, and I was out-of-my-mind high that night. And I was like, ‘Okay so now it’s time to start taking care of this issue,’ but I thought I could juggle it, which I did up until about three-and-a-half years ago. So really the sobriety thing is relatively new, and it’s almost like you could fall off any second. But I’ve been holding on to it because I want to be attentive to the responsibilities that I have, and also because after years and years of doing it, it starts to get old.”

Of Michael Jackson’s drug-related death last year, Slash said of the man he performed with live: “It’s sad that he’s not here ... When all that stuff happened in 2001 or whenever it was, he got all of those (accusations) and stuff, the one thing that Michael really wanted, and the one thing that made him happy, was he wanted everybody to like him.

“And so all of the sudden he was completely ostracized, pretty much by North America, for all these accusations (even) though he was acquitted, and it sort of just killed him.”

Ha suonato solo in Give into Me e nel video di Black or White.
